Town’s Cann Lake skating rink won’t open this year

The Town of Huntsville said in a release today that the Cann Lake Skating Rink will remain closed for the 2016 winter season.

Mayor Scott Aitchison notes that “due to this year’s unpredictable weather conditions, shortened winter season and the resources that are required to build and maintain the rink, the Municipality is unable to offer Cann Lake as a service for 2016. Council does recognize the importance of the rink to the community however the annual resources required to deliver this service is not something that is feasible under these conditions.”

Residents are encouraged to visit the Canada Summit Centre for many public skating opportunities such as; Adult Shinny, Adult and Senior Skate, Weekend Public Skate as well as the Parent and Tot Skate. Rates and specific public skating times are available online at huntsville.ca. Residents can also contact customer service for more details at 705-789-6421.

Every town should support an outdoor skating rink for families, how much does it actually cost, really? If the town can’t support and put forth a better effort to provide an outdoor skating rink then they should help with the cost of skating admissions at the arena because as mentioned above it is very costly.

The Summit Centre isn’t much of an alternative. Not the same experience by a long stretch. And costly. Maybe some of the local adults and teens could keep it shovelled?
