Despite earlier hopes that it would be able to use Pitman’s Bay for its own summer camp programming, the Town will issue a Request For Proposal (RFP) for weekday youth programming at the facility for July and August in 2018 and 2019.
At the October General Committee meeting, staff informed councillors that Highlands Youth for Christ would be cancelling its contract for use of Pitman’s Bay, and that staff would return with future options for the outdoor facility including the possibility of running town camps there.
That option turned out to not be feasible. Town staff presented a report at the December 19 General Committee citing limited staff resources and the impact of increased wages due to Bill 148 as reasons for not proceeding with town programming at the site. Staff had considered three options: moving the Town’s Summit Summer Camp to Pitman’s Bay, creating a new Adventure Camp, or offering a variety of activities including canoe/kayak programming, orienteering, and adventure-based programs. To fully staff these programs would make the rates cost-prohibitive for users according to the report, but staff noted that future programming could be possible.
Staff were directed to issue an RFP for 2018 and 2019 for summer youth programming and report back to General Committee with the results.
