Town to consider changing its procurement policy

When Huntsville Council meets this evening, flag use and amendments to the municipality’s procurement policy will be on the agenda.

Discussions are expected to be held about whether to fly or lower the U.S. flag in public spaces in light of the scheduled imposition of significant U.S. tariffs on Canadian exports, expected to severely impact the economy.

Council will also be presented with amendments to the Town of Huntsville’s procurement policy, giving preference to Canadian goods, and services.

Council meets on Monday, March 24 at 5:30 p.m. You can watch the meeting HERE.

Speaking of flags how about we make sure our Canadian flags are given the care and respect they need. The flag at the library is pitiful looking, stained with holes and tears.

When I first heard the proposal, my knee jerk reaction was to tear them all down. But upon more serious thought, taking them down is not going to influence the US president any more than taking down the Russian flag influenced the Russian president. Removal of the Russian flag is different because that is we, the people of Huntsville, showing solidarity with the people of Ukraine, who are being attacked and invaded by Russia. We Canadians are not annoyed with US citizens, we are annoyed with the president they legally elected on the pretext that wages would be higher and goods would be cheaper. So in support of the people, some of whom are our relatives and friends, US flags should remain flying for now.

I have been following the flag debate for some time.. I understand and appreciate the emotional responses, however the flag park was built to memorialize the G7 event and those who attended. The same thing is true of the Tom Thompson painting that the dignitaries who add a couple of brush stokes to.. I do not see either one of them as political statements.

I feel if we wish to support Ukraine , we should fly the flag at The Town Hall. Probably the time has come for council to put up a couple of flag post at the Town hall so we can fly political statements, organizational support each designated month.
Obviously we do not fly the US flag on any town property so it is a mute point. I believe our council has many more pressing issues – homelessness, food insecurity and proper planning..

No need to fan the fire. The USA is still our closest and oldest neighbour.

As an American, living 30 minutes from the Canadian border, I take exception to the comment that “you won’t find (the Canadian flag) ours flying in their public spaces.”. NOT true. It DOES fly here. That said, I HATE tRUMP and everything he stands for, everything he has done and intends to TRY to do. He is a madman, evil in every way. Millions of Americans feel the same way, and those who supported him are beginning to experience karma. GOOD. I feel no sympathy for them. I have been vacationing in Muskoka for close to 74 years. I love Canada, I love Canadians. Feel free to remove our flag from public spaces. We don ‘t blame you, and it won’t deter us from crossing the border. Stand strong, don’t take his garbage. He is a sick man.

  6. Lynn Bennett says:

Take the US flag down in all spaces with the exception of the G7. You will not find a Canadian flag in their public spaces — enough!

  7. Margaret Brown says:

Are we being serious here? City Council is voting on lowering the American flag? This is not very smart.
    Please reconsider this.

    A suggestion re. flags.

Keep flying the USA flag, but always, in every situation, make sure it is only quarter the size of all the other flags.
Similar for Russia, maybe one sixth the size.

An easy switch, makes the point better than simply removing it.

Lowering it is reserved for the death of someone important and this tradition should not be messed with as it works just fine.

To follow suit with many communities I feel the publicly dispayled American flags should be taken down. I think it’s a slap in the face to any proud Canadian to have to look at a waving American flag at this time when the Trump government is threatening our livihood, our jobs and our peace of mind.

As far as our businesses, the American tourists will still come. A flag will not in anyway deter them.
And if they don’t come I’m confident more Canadians will.
