The Town of Huntsville is moving forward with the placement of six surveillance cameras in River Mill Park, hoping to thwart vandals from further destroying public property.
There have been several incidents at the park, including damage to the washrooms.
Two 365-degree cameras will be located on the opposite corners of the washroom facility, and four will be located on the bandshell, pointing in various directions. Signs will be placed in the park informing visitors of the surveillance cameras.
Council heard that the cameras will not be monitored, but the footage will be cached for at least 14 days and available only to the bylaw enforcement department or via a legal request.
Council agreed to set aside $7,000 for the River Mill Park surveillance project from the IT Capital Reserve, bringing the total for surveillance projects throughout the municipality – including Muskoka Heritage Place and the Canada Summit Centre – to $77,000.
A public meeting was held to gather input from the public on the surveillance plan for River Mill Park during the first part of the council meeting on May 26. No comments from the public were received.
