The Town of Huntsville, Huntsville Council, Muskoka Heritage Place and The Huntsville Public Library would like to invite the community to participate in Truth and Reconciliation Week from September 27 to October 1, 2021 and Huntsville’s Orange Shirt Day March and Gathering on September 30, 2021.
Truth and Reconciliation Week is a five-day national initiative hosted by the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) that continues the conversation about the truths of the Indigenous treaties, First Nation, Métis and Inuit land claims, and the residential schools’ system in the days leading up to Orange Shirt Day and the new federally legislated National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, 2021.
The Town of Huntsville, Huntsville Council, The Huntsville Public Library and Muskoka Heritage Place are pleased to recognize the national event and affirm our commitment to raising awareness of the residential school experience in hopes for a better future.
On September 30, National Truth and Reconciliation Day everyone is welcome to attend Huntsville’s Orange Shirt Day March and Gathering. The march will start at 1:00pm and leave from the High Street Municipal parking lot and proceed to River Mill Park. An opening ceremony will commence at 1:30pm. The event will take place rain or shine and Covid-19 safety measures will be in place.
Starting the week of September 27, Muskoka Heritage Place will be adding a permanent panel to their Indigenous Exhibit in the Muskoka Museum to further provide awareness and education on the mistreatment of Indigenous peoples.
For the entire week, the Huntsville Public Library is hosting exclusive online videos and activities created by The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. The artistic and cultural performances by First Nations, Métis, and Inuit artists will show traditional ceremonies and artistic performances, alongside conversations with Elders and knowledge keepers, Survivors, and children of Survivors of residential schools.
