After 22 years as an elected Huntsville and District councillor, Brian Thompson has announced that he will not be seeking re-election this fall.

“It’s been a transition year for me, you know I reached a certain age in life that makes you stop and think about how many more trips around the sun one might have,” said Thompson, 75, who recently sold his house. He bought a condominium but said it won’t be ready for a year or so, so he plans on doing some travelling once this term of council is over.

First up on his trips, Thompson said he plans to trace his roots and travel to Ireland, Scotland, and England. After that, he said he’ll have some planning to do. He’s interested in seeing Thailand but plans on spending this coming winter on Vancouver Island.

He said municipalities have some real challenges coming up in the next term or two of council as they try to reduce their greenhouse gas emission by 50 per cent by 2030. “That’s going to be really, really challenging but I think it can be done. We’ve already had some discussions about electric vehicles with the fleet manager at the District of Muskoka, but there’s much more to it than that,” he noted.

Thompson said he’s also pleased about the Town of Huntsville’s commitment to increasing access to water and making access points easier to find. He’s also feeling optimistic that more of the Town’s budget is going to public works for infrastructure such as roads.

Thompson has focused his entire career on public works operations at both the Town of Huntsville and the District of Muskoka. He said he’s excited about the fact that Huntsville has increased its public works budget for infrastructure such as roads,

He also said he hopes efforts to attract more doctors to the area continue.

The municipal election takes place on October 24, 2022.

It has been a pleasure to get requainted since my days in Oshawa and the Green Gaels. As a Councillor now in Lake of Bays we don’t work directly together but have discussed many similar issues. The Town of Huntsville is losing a great champion on Council but the rest of us are gaining a friend to perhaps stop in while I’m making maple syrup or even follow through on your consideration of joining Kiwanis. Regardless I would be glad to have you over for a coffee anytime. Enjoy your vacations my good friend, you deserve them all….and maybe take in a Salmonbellies lacrosse game while out there.
