The SportLab celebrates 10 years

Dr. Lowell Greib, owner of The SportLab, says that his goal for the practice was always to help active individuals either heal or get to their personal goals through both physical treatment and nutrition. Ten years later, the clinic’s team continues to do just that.

“I get to work with such a massive variety of people and I love that, ” he said. “I have a grandmother that wants to get up and go for daily walks but I’ve also worked with a five-time Olympian. That’s what makes it exciting. You never know who your next person is gonna be.”

Greib first obtained a degree in biochemistry and went on to achieve a masters degree in analytical chemistry, followed by another four-year degree in order to become a naturopathic doctor. After obtaining his certification in sports nutrition and speaking with a client in marketing, Greib concluded that sports was the field he belonged in as it was always his true passion.

Greib runs the clinic alongside his partner Dr. Katherine Ahokas who is also a doctor of naturopathic medicine and certified nutritionist, amongst many other achievements.

“All of our clinicians are athletes too,” said Greib. “This allows us to combine science, medicine, and sport into the plan of each of our clients. We focus on the active, motivated individual but work with anyone who wants to get better with exercise.”

Through both the clinic and volunteer work, the pair have worked with high-performance athletes and say doing so has helped them tremendously in their practice.

“We like to look at the overall person and get a handle on them as a person to better treat them,” said Greib. “We use both a physical and nutritional aspect.”

The SportLab has just launched the SportLab Recovery Suite, which has been two years in the making.

The Recovery Suite, a comprehensive and immersive recovery experience, was created to combine physical modalities with an educational platform to give active individuals a more detailed treatment plan to excel in their industry.

“The sooner that an injury is dealt with, the better the outcome,” said Greib. “If you treat it sooner there is less risk of it happening again. The number one indicator of injury is previous injury.”

Greib says he is particularly proud of how much he and Ahokas have been immersed in community service over their 10 years here.

“Rather than sponsoring events we wanted to use our knowledge skill and talent to assist in local events,” he said “We like to take our experiences and bringing them back to the community. The dust doesn’t settle around this joint, that’s for sure.”

Over the years they have volunteered at and created many events, including the Kids’ Bike Rodeo, the Mayor’s Bike Ride, the Responders Run, and Greib has been the medical director for the Limberlost Challenge for 10 years as well as medical director for the Toronto Marathon.

They also support the fire department, where Ahokas is a firefighter, and educate them on how to mitigate risks of cancer and heart attack or heart disease.

“I know I can use my skills and education to support people and it’s important to me to give back, it has been ever since I was a child,” said Greib. “I like to think we have made a difference in this community and it’s so incredible to see athletes we have worked with going on to elite levels globally.”
