Emotions were running high in Oakville this past weekend when the Huntsville Sting U11 Black triumphed at the Survive the Hive tournament, going six games without a loss to take gold in their division.
Coaches and parents could not be more proud of the team.
“We went down to the tournament thinking, we’ll have some fun and maybe win a game,” said co-coach Scott Doughty. “We went 6-0 and won the gold medal… I was crying, everyone was screaming. It was just amazing.”
There were 20 teams in the Sting’s division, and these dedicated young players, which include a couple of U9s, were the only ones to go undefeated for the duration of the three-day tournament.
After winning all three games in their pool, they beat the Oakville Devils in the quarter finals 3-2, bested the Oakville Phoenixes in the semi-finals 9-4, and then stayed ahead of the Wilmot Wolverines to win the gold-medal game 3-2.
Survive the Hive attracts more than 100 teams in five divisions.
The Sting’s U13 were also undefeated in round-robin play, earning a place in the semi-finals to finish in third place out of 20 teams. The U15 Black team advanced to the quarter finals and finished in eighth place out of 25 teams.
