Put a spring in your step with some new leisure activities – kayak polo, anyone?

Cabin fever got you down? Keep your chin up – spring is coming soon and with it a slate of new and favourite activities from the Town of Huntsville. The Spring & Summer 2017 Leisure Activity Guide is now available – have you checked it out online to see what’s new? (Pick up a print copy at Town Hall or the Canada Summit Centre or watch for it in the March 2 Forester.)

Join the maker movement, take up kayak polo, start your memoir, learn about the enduring appeal of Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, and much, much more.

Make a splash!

Kayak polo is the newest watersport to make waves in the Centennial Pool. It’s been so popular that in addition to the six-week program this spring, the Muskoka Kayak School is running a four-week ladies’ kayak polo program and a four-week kids’ learn-to-kayak session. Watch for outdoor sessions in the summer, too.

The ultra-popular Hydrorider Aquabike classes are back this spring with expanded times to accommodate more riders – don’t forget to book your bike in advance!

Or plan ahead for family canoe instruction so your whole clan can explore the lakes this summer. And don’t forget about the full schedule of child and adult swim classes and aquafitness classes.

Make it your own

The maker movement is where it’s at these days – there’s great satisfaction in making something with your own two hands. So, ladies, gather your girlfriends for a creative, girls-only night out complete with sweets from Whimsical Bakery. This spring, make a gorgeous painting with Donna Callow of Heartfelt Designs – no experience necessary. With Donna’s step-by-step instructions, you’ll take home your very own masterpiece. And just as you start enjoying your outdoor spaces, Kelly Musters from Sandhill Nursery will guide you through making a beautiful planter to brighten your deck or dock all summer long.

Donna Callow will teach you how to paint - no experience necessary!

Don’t let the DIY stop there – discover how to record your experiences in a memoir-writing workshop, find your groove in the beat of a drum circle, or find new passions in the dozens of other adult programs available this year.

Get a taste of something new

Wrap yourself up in some comforting kitchen love with a pasta-making class. You’ll learn instructor Linda Nardilli Morrin’s tricks for making perfect pasta, enjoy a delicious meal, and take home recipes including one for her Nonna’s Italian sauce.

Learn how easy it is to bring out your green thumb – everyone’s got one when it comes to sprouting. Reap the rewards of having greens readily available all year long with Steve and Sharon Bacon of Four Season Greens.

Do you know how easy it is to grow your own sprouts? (Really, really easy!) Four Season Greens will show you how.

Healthy Eating and Living Workshops are back at a new time on Sunday afternoons – take one or take them all and learn simple steps for the healthiest you, sample a healthy snack and take home recipes so you can keep it going at home.

More than summer camp

There are lots of fun things to do for kids 4-12 at the PA Day and Summer Camps (registration opens May 1!), but it isn’t the only youth activity you’ll find at the Town of Huntsville. Kids can learn valuable skills or just get out to try some new things. Tennis, anyone? Or how about learning to play the ukulele?

They can learn what it takes to be a great babysitter or become confident about staying home alone. And if they loved summer camp, teens can take training to become a camp counsellor, too!

Celebrate Tom Thomson’s legacy

This summer’s speaker series features tributes to iconic Canadian painter Tom Thomson.

Adventure seekers Sue and Jim Waddington share their 40-year-and-counting journey to photograph and document the locations that inspired Thomson and the Group of Seven.

Former Huntsville resident, Andrew Kear, Curator of Canadian Art at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, explores our collective and enduring fascination with Tom Thomson’s art and tears away the myths surrounding his life.

Seating is limited for these engaging talks.

And more…!

Check out the Spring & Summer Leisure Activity Guide for details on all of these programs and more. You’ll find it at locations around town or online here. Don’t forget to check back on summer programs – if a class doesn’t fit your spring schedule it just might work in July!
