Public skating rink being installed at River Mill Park over the next few days

The Huntsville/Lake of Bays Chamber of Commerce has been hard at work planning for a public skating rink at River Mill Park in Downtown Huntsville.

According to the Chamber, it will be staffed every evening with a roaring bonfire and weekend entertainment on and off the ice.

The rink will be 42′ by 92′ and is being installed at the park over the next few days. It is expected to open to the public (weather permitting) from January 17 to March 16 at the user’s own risk.

“We will have staff playing canned music and starting a bonfire every night with the rink lit up from 5-9pm. We have on/ice entertainment every Saturday between those dates and a couple Sundays,” noted interim Executive Director for the Chamber, Halley Clover.

There will be full-day activities at the rink as part of the Huntsville Snowfest festival taking place on Feb 24th with the launch of the Festival of the Arts Snow Village which will be built around the rink.  You can get all the info here: https://www.huntsvillesnowfest.com

Well, I wondered how the ice going in was going to be handled..since there is a good slope to the park in front of the bandshell.
Now I know! The troops are erecting a level frame, over which plywood will be placed. It should end up being dead flat.. obviously, this is something that may happen again, and again..too much invested for a one off.. Depending on their skills, it might even end up suitable for curling!!
So far, a great improvement on previous rink to the west of the bandshell.
