Section of Minerva Street parking being angled for safety

In response to feedback from visitors to Huntsville Public Library, new diagonal parking lines will be painted on Minerva St. E. in the parking area directly across from the library.

Angled parking spaces will increase safety and visibility for pedestrians crossing the street and also for cars parking in these spaces.

The lines will be painted during the week of June 20. The lines on the accessible parking spot will not change.

This is certainly a step in the right direction. Better yet, however, would be to make High St. one-way from Brunel Rd. to West St. with angled-parking on both sides. In fact it could be extended one-way to Centre St., but few additional angled-parking spaces would be gained.

Making High St. right-in only access on both sides as well, eliminates the vehicular conflicts; and makes the intersection considerably safer for pedestrians also. (An angled pedestrian crossing between the two new islands could be considered.)

While we’re at it, let’s do the same with the perpendicular parking at the corner of High Street and Brunel.
