Seasonal load restrictions begin March 14

A message from the District of Muskoka

Restricting heavy loads at this time of year prevents damage to roads. Every year, “half-loads” or reduced/seasonal load restrictions on select roadways come into effect temporarily to protect infrastructure.

Seasonal load restrictions come into effect in Muskoka on Monday, March 14, 2022.

When half-load restrictions are in effect, signs will indicate the road is off-limits to heavy transports and vehicles exceeding 5 tonnes per axle. However, there may be alternate routes that can be taken to reach the destination.

Visit the District website to explore an interactive map of District road half-load restrictions on Muskoka GeoHub, the District’s online web mapping portal.

Reason for seasonal load restrictions

In the spring, as frost comes out of the ground and moisture comes out of the roadbed, roads become softer and heavy loads on a road can cause it to sink and break apart, which can lead to permanent damage. Seasonal weight restrictions are put in place to protect roads and roadbeds from being damaged, which reduces the need to rebuild a road after every spring thaw.

Time of year

How long the restrictions last depends on the weather, and how long the District experiences a freezing-thawing pattern. Exact dates are set each year, depending on road conditions and temperatures, and are generally from March to May.
