Without effective communications of bus cancellations and school closures, a student locked out or waiting for a bus that is not coming, can end up with serious frostbite. Really cold weather is dangerous to everyone who may get delayed or stuck in a snowbank, especially with all our rural roads. When I worked in Alberta for the government there was a temperature cut off for all our travel by car ( long distances in rural North) and a survival workshop we all needed to take.
Re the safety of teachers driving to and from:
I’m a retired primary teacher. I worked for SMCDSB (Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board) until December, 2017. If we deemed it unsafe to drive to school we didn’t have to. We were to do school work from home. As conditions improved, we were to drive to our school or to the nearest school. Our Board was overall, supportive of this. I don’t know what the ‘rule’ is now.
What about the safety of the teachers driving to and from?
