Employee mental health workshop

Robinson’s Independent highlights importance of employee mental health with free workshop

THIS BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT SHINES ON

Brought to you by these community-minded organizations because they recognize that
good business is good for everyone:

Would you know how to recognize and assist your employees or co-workers who are struggling with mental health concerns?

On August 29, Robinson’s Independent Grocer will be once again sponsoring and hosting Mental Health Works, a workshop presented by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CAMH), Muskoka–Parry Sound Branch. The workshop will show business leaders and employees how to recognize mental health symptoms and signs and explain what a business can do to assist employees in getting the help they require.

The store ran its first Mental Health Works workshop in June and due to demand decided to offer it for a second time.

“We know mental health affects the whole community. We’ve had staff members that have been affected by it and I think all businesses just need to recognize that it is all around us,” said Robinson’s YIG store manager Maggie Fines. “It’s something people have kind of put in the closet and never really paid much attention to it and they need to have a wake up call that every business is affected with an employee or family member or friend. Everybody needs that support.”

The workshop is intended to help reduce the stigma about mental health, and to encourage employers, employees and their families to talk about any concerns they have. It will help those who supervise or manage employees to understand the role of mental health in a safe workplace, and to help them recognize signs that employees may be struggling.

This isn’t the first mental health-related initiative at Robinson’s. For three years running, the store held a pumpkin painting party in the fall and those creations were later sold in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association, Muskoka-Parry Sound. In total, it raised about $5,000 for the cause.

The Mental Health Works workshop will be held on August 29 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Upstairs Community Room at Robinson’s Independent Grocer. Workshop attendance is capped at 40 people; register early by calling the Canadian Mental Health Association, Muskoka-Parry Sound at 705-645-2262.

If you have questions about the workshop, contact Randy Robinson or Maggie Fines at 705-789-6972 or Jackie Vincent of the Canadian Mental Health Association at 705-205-2534 or [email protected].
