Reel Alternatives to host live Q & A with acclaimed Canadian Inuk Director Zacharias Kunuk

Reel Alternatives Huntsville couldn’t be more proud or excited to host a virtual Q&A with acclaimed  Canadian Inuk director, Zacharias Kunuk and writer/producer Samuel Cohn-Cousineau after the  screening of their film, Uiksaringitara (Wrong Husband) next Monday, May 11th at 7pm. The film is generously sponsored by Cedar Canoe Books.

Zacharias Kunuk was born in the Igloolik region (now part of Nunavut). He is best known for his film  Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner, which was the first Canadian feature film produced entirely in Inuktitut. It won Best Canadian Feature at TIFF (as did Uiksaringitara last year) and the Caméra d’Or at Cannes. It was ranked the No. 1 Canadian film of all time in a 2015 poll conducted by the Toronto International  Film Festival.

He is also the co-founder of Isuma Productions, the first independent Inuit-led film production company in Canada. His other films include The Journals of Knud Rasmussen, Maliglutit (Searchers) and One Day in the Life of Noah Piugattuk.

His latest film, Uiksaringitara (Wrong Husband) is a captivating, epic, historical drama about an arranged marriage, set 4,000 years ago. With arresting imagery, his trademark humour, and a cast of mostly non-professional actors, Kunuk has again created a world that not only builds upon Inuit stories and legends to enthrall audiences but also works to preserve these reimagined stories for generations to come.

Audience members are encouraged to stay after the film for this special opportunity to connect live virtually with these talented and important Canadian filmmakers.

Tickets are available for just $10 online at reelalternativeshuntsville.ca or algonquintheatre.ca, at the door or by calling the Algonquin Theatre box office at 705-789-4975. Reel Alternatives Huntsville gratefully acknowledges their partnership with Film Circuit, presented by the Toronto International Film  Festival, and its sponsors and supporters.

Thank you Reel Alternatives and Cedar Canoe Books. This was a powerful film and moving opportunity to hear writer/director Zach Kunuk. Real emotion and life-lived outside our imagination. I wish for all Canadians to get a (or any) consideration of people’s life in the North: past, present and future and this was fine education.
