Reel Alternatives’s next screening at the Algonquin Theatre is of the acclaimed Canadian film, Riceboy Sleeps.
This film has been getting a lot of buzz, not to mention numerous awards, since it premiered at TIFF last year. It won the Best Canadian Film Award from the Toronto Film Critics Association and the TIFF Platform Prize and was nominated for six Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Motion Picture. Tickets are available online, by phone at 705-789-4975 or in person at the Canada Summit Centre customer service desk.
Numerous key Canadian films have addressed the trauma of immigrating to this country, but few have been as emotionally stirring as director Anthony Shim’s assured, moving Riceboy Sleeps.
Set in the 90s, a Korean single mother raises her young son in the suburbs of Canada determined to provide a better life for him than the one she left behind. There, they must fight for acceptance and respect. As they navigate their separate circumstances, the rift between mother and son grows. Unwelcome news sparks an unplanned return to South Korea — and the in-laws the mother hasn’t spoken to in many years — but might open up the possibility of mutual understanding.
Director Shim’s deep engagement with his subjects sparks profound, affecting revelations. Throughout, he expertly balances the very different perspectives of a boy and his mother, poignantly capturing his loneliness and frustration, her isolation and sacrifices. Language: English and Korean. Content advisory: themes of racism, mental illness, and drug use.
