There’s nothing like a lovable alien to warm your heart for the holidays, right? Reel Alternatives, Huntsville’s connection to the TIFF Film Circuit, presents their next movie, Jules on Monday, December 18 at 7 p.m. in partnership with the Algonquin Theatre. Starring Ben Kingsley with Jane Curtin in a supporting role, this gentle comedy effectively blends quirky humor with an underlying message about appreciating our seniors into a silly yet warm-hearted package.
Jules follows Milton (Ben Kingsley) who lives a quiet life of routine in a small western Pennsylvania town, but finds his day upended when a UFO and its extra-terrestrial passenger crash land in his backyard. Before long, Milton develops a close relationship with the extra-terrestrial he calls “Jules.” Things become complicated when two neighbors (Harriet Sansom Harris and Jane Curtin) discover Jules and the government quickly closes in. What follows is a funny, wildly inventive ride as the three neighbors find meaning and connection later in life – thanks to this unlikely stranger.
Ben Kingsley’s quietly powerful performance drives this slight yet affecting crowd-pleaser from director Marc Turtletaub which puts a lighthearted science-fiction twist on its exploration of aging, mortality, regret, and loneliness. Think of it as a modern-day E.T. for adults with a feel-good story, just right for the Christmas season. (Rated PG13 for strong language.)
Tickets for Jules are on sale at the Algonquin Theatre by phone at 705-789-4975 or online at algonquintheatre.ca.
Now In its 24th year of bringing fine Canadian and international films to Huntsville, Reel Alternatives is a non-profit group that invites the community to experience movies as they were meant to be seen – on the big screen with fellow film lovers – at the beautiful Algonquin Theatre. Reel Alternatives Huntsville gratefully acknowledges its partnership with Film Circuit, presented by TIFF, and its sponsors and supporters.
