Reel Alternatives brings Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret to the screen on Monday, November 6

Reel Alternatives, Huntsville’s connection to the Toronto Film Festival Film Circuit, is set to present its next movie, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret in partnership with the Algonquin Theatre on Monday, November 6th. Based on the bestselling novel by Judy Blume, this 2023 film adaptation stars Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates, and Abby Ryder Fortson, and tells the seemingly universal story of what it means to grow up, find out who you are, and discover what you believe in. This film is generously supported by returning sponsor, The Nutty Chocolatier.

When 11-year-old Margaret’s family relocates from the city to the suburbs, she not only has to contend with a new life but also new friends and the new changes to her body that come with the beginning of adolescence. Coming from a half-Jewish and half-Christian family yet raised atheist, Margaret starts asking her father and mother (Rachel McAdams) about these big existential questions. Questioning her faith and identity, she visits her grandma (Kathy Bates)  and attends Temple, but that doesn’t quite fit. One of her friends takes her to Church, but that doesn’t feel right either. While it seems like every other kid has their identity figured out,  Margaret feels stuck in the middle, unable to grow up until she answers these questions definitively.

Not only will fans of the now 50-year-old book find this adaptation faithful, but it will also speak to today’s adolescents who will see themselves accurately depicted on screen. Poised as one of the best coming-of-age book adaptations to date (with a Rotten Tomato score of 99%),  Margaret is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. The movie site IMDB rates this movie PG-13 based on its themes and includes a parent’s guide as a resource.

Tickets are $10 each and are on sale at the Algonquin Theatre by phone at 705-789-4975 or online at algonquintheatre.ca.

Now in its 24th year of bringing fine Canadian and international films to Huntsville, Reel  Alternatives is a non-profit group that invites the community to experience movies as they were meant to be seen – on the big screen with fellow film lovers – at the beautiful Algonquin Theatre.  Reel Alternatives Huntsville gratefully acknowledges its partnership with Film Circuit, presented by TIFF, and its sponsors and supporters.
