A reckless driver who managed to evade police during a wild chase through Muskoka couldn’t avoid the long arm of the law in the end, a Bracebridge Court heard recently.
Dwaine Graham, 35, of King Township, pled guilty to failing to stop for police and operating a vehicle in a dangerous manner stemming from an incident that occurred June 22, 2022.
Court heard on that day at 3:45 p.m. the Huntsville OPP received a call regarding a motor vehicle collision on Highway 11 southbound.
The caller said they had been driving southbound when an SUV approached from behind in the same lane traveling at roughly 145 km an hour. The suspect vehicle crashed directly into the rear of the victim’s vehicle which then rolled twice before ending up in the ditch in the centre median of Highway 11.
The SUV continued without stopping but Bracebridge OPP were on the lookout and saw the vehicle with substantial damage to the front end continuing southbound on Highway 11. Court heard the Bracebridge OPP attempted to pull over the SUV but it failed to stop. A spike belt was deployed but was not successful. Traffic on the highway was heavy at the time, Court heard, and the pursuit was terminated.
Police were ultimately able to determine the identity of the driver, Graham, who has a considerable criminal record and who was under a driving ban at the time of the pursuit, court heard.
