On Saturday, July 8, 2023, The Limberlost Challenge will take place at the spectacular Limberlost Forest and Wildlife Reserve east of Huntsville. It is one of Ontario’s oldest, established trail running events with 7, 14, 28, 42, and 56 km races.
The Limberlost Challenge is highly anticipated by the running community. Runners come from all over Ontario, notably from communities local to Huntsville and Toronto.
On Saturday, June 3, an energetic group of runners attended Limberlost to try out the new 7 and 14 km routes. The consensus was that the new routes are the best yet, with the 14 km being more challenging than last year!
Established in 2010, The Limberlost Challenge is a regular annual community event. Many runners treat this as a “destination” event, bringing family and friends for an extended adventure by either camping at Limberlost or staying in the area.
A portion of each runner’s registration fee goes towards a donation to the Trails Youth Initiative (https://trails.ca ) which mentors youth through their high school years. The Limberlost Forest and Wildlife Reserve is their northern campus. Every year, their youth leaders join on race day, taking care of one of the aid stations to hand out much-needed refreshments for the runners.
The race needs many other enthusiastic volunteers to help make it a safe, fun, and remarkable experience! Many of the volunteers are runners themselves or friends/family, or residents of the area. To thank volunteers, organizers provide them with a delicious lunch, T-shirt, and camping opportunity.
