The Province of Ontario has awarded a new highway maintenance contract for the Huntsville area, taking effect September 1, 2018, it said in a bulletin today.
Following a Request for Proposals (RFP) process that began on September 14, 2017, which the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) says included “new measures to strengthen winter maintenance activities, including enhancements to winter equipment requirements, road patrolling requirements and the use of winter materials”, it awarded the contract to Fowler Construction.
The current service provider, Carillion Canada, will continue to provide services until their contract ends on August 31, 2018, said the bulletin, including “continuing to deliver enhanced service levels implemented in the last few winters.” The MTO’s winter maintenance standards can be found here.
The contract valued at approximately $18 million covers provincial highways within the Muskoka, Haliburton, Huntsville and Parry Sound areas.

Seems we may have been ill-informed. Most folks in the chatisphere thought the Carrillion contract had been issued for 12 years and rightfully bi—ed about that. What’s up with that?
Now the local folks who very capably provided the service for years are going to be back. That’s great news. Fowler only employed Muskoka people including many from Huntsville and the money flowed back into the local economy.
(Disclosure…..I worked for Fowler for 34 years ).
No one is perfect and no doubt there will be sore points and issues going forward but at least there will be locals on the other end of the phone when complaints are issued. Fowler has changed hands and the historic local ownership has passed to others but the staff on the ground are still Muskoka people with their own families on the highways.
I look forward to the new arrangements.
Great to find out. It is about time.
