Peter Redwood to serve as bylaw enforcement officer for the downtown

Here’s lookin’ at you kid. Those may not be Peter Redwood’s exact words, but this summer he’ll be watching where and for how long people park in Huntsville’s downtown.

“As most people know, the parking situation is not adequate for the number of visitors we get each year and I’m taking on the role to try and make that as most pleasant an occurrence as we can,” said Redwood after being appointed bylaw enforcement officer by Huntsville Council at its March 23 meeting. He’ll be playing the ambassador role and assisting people looking for parking, but he’ll also pull out the enforcement card if people refuse to follow parking etiquette, especially as it pertains to no parking areas or those with time limits.

“Enforcement will certainly be part of it. There’s always a parking problem,” he said. “I think the real answer lies in education.” Redwood said there’s parking around the downtown core, people just have to be made aware of it.

“Why do you need to park right in front of a store when you can be half a block away? If you want to park all day, if you’re shopping all day, and don’t want to be bothered moving your car within a two hour time limit, there are places you can go,” he explained. “I’ll be assisting visitors on where they can park and advising them that parking (in a certain area) could result in a ticket,” he concluded.

Well it’s about time! I sure hope you pay particular attention to the parking along the bridge area by Pizza Pizza. Really, the no parking signage and the lines on the road mean nothing. People know that no one is going to do anything about the blatant attitude towards the parking there. Why can’t Pizza Pizza do their pickups & deliveries behind the restaurant. It’s not like there’s no accessibility there for them. And it’s certainly not just them taking advantage of illegal parking. When you get a long line of cars parking along there you can’t safely get two cars past, one going straight through & one turning left up Brunel. It’s very frustrating, but the town seems to turn a blind eye to this problem even though I’m sure they’ve felt the same frustration. Please pay attention to this area.
