Andrew Hind, author and administrator of the Facebook site Almaguin Highlands Vintage Photography shared this photo of a team of oxen in 1900 in South River hauling a load of firewood.

Hind explained that Oxen were well suited to such tasks because they were powerful, and their two toes adapted better to slippery conditions, such as boggy ground and snow, than horses’ hooves. For more on oxen and their role, you can read Hind’s book Founded on Stone 3: Even More Tales of Early Parry Sound District.

Hind also notes that because homes were drafty and because people relied on fire for cooking, they used a minimum of 10 cords, and often as many as 40, over the course of a winter.
