Ontario Premier Doug Ford responds to U.S. tariffs

Donald Trump has officially launched a 25% tariff on most Canadian goods

Ontario Premier Doug Ford issued the following statement in response:

I’m extremely disappointed that President Trump has chosen to walk away from a trading relationship that for decades has made life better for millions of workers on both sides of the border.

I wish we weren’t here. I wish Ontario and Canada were working together with our American friends and allies to make our two countries the richest, most successful, safest, most secure on the planet. Instead, President Trump has chosen to move forward with tariffs that will only hurt America and make Americans poorer. Canada now has no choice but to hit back and hit back hard.

As Premier of Ontario, the federal government has my full support for a strong and forceful response that matches U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar. Canada has so much of what America needs: high-grade nickel and other critical minerals, energy and electricity, uranium, potash, aluminum. We need to maximize our points of leverage and use them to maximum effect. The federal government needs to also pursue every legal route to challenge these unfair, unjustified and illegal tariffs.

The coming days and weeks will be incredibly difficult. Trump’s tariffs will devastate our economy. They’ll put 450,000 jobs at risk across the province. Every sector and region will feel the impact.

With a strong, stable, four-year mandate that outlives and outlasts the Trump administration, I’ll do whatever it takes to protect Ontario, our workers, businesses and communities. I’ll invest tens of billions to retrain workers for new opportunities, retool companies for new customers, reshore supply chains and rebuild roads and highways to create new jobs. I’ll make tough choices to make Ontario’s economy the most competitive place to invest, create jobs and do business.

None of us want to be here, but Canada and Ontario have faced down this kind of challenge before. Each time, we’ve emerged stronger, more united, more determined than ever. Canada and Ontario will once again answer the call.

Together, we’ll meet this moment. We’ll stand united. We’ll stand strong.

Together, we’ll protect Ontario.

Ford responds to Trump’s tariffs with calling an election to take advantage of the situation and extend his mandate.
Just like Trudeau did Ford is calling for an unnecessary election. Wasting millions of our tax dollars in the process. Protecting Ontario’s jobs is part of his job description. He doesn’t need a new mandate for that. He’s fooled a few it seems. Ford borrowed 3 BILLION dollars to give everyone $200 to blatantly buy their vote. Fooled a few more it seems. Ford’s deficits are much higher than Wynne’s.
Just like Trump Ford is ignoring conventions and protocols. Search “Opposition parties say Doug Ford is violating the caretaker convention with his trip to Washington. Here’s what that means” “Every government to this point, federally and provincially, has honoured that convention because they realize one day they will be an opposition party,”

I’m not sure what happened to my first comment on this topic but I’ll try again.
Yes, we have been treated unfairly by the US government, yes, at least half of Americans are not our friends, and yes, I support every meaningful effort by our provinces to stand up to and resist this tactic that has been taken by an uneducated showman and his entourage of no nothing’s.
The announcement this morning that Doug Ford is canceling the contracts with Elon Musk and his Starlink is great news but let’s remember that this was negotiated and signed when Musk had already given his support to Donald Trump.
Doug Ford knew that and in spite of opposition did it anyway. Now he’s a hero.
Only a week ago the liberals called for the cancellation of this contract and Ford ignored those requests.
Ford has repeatedly spoke highly of Trump and models his tactics.
Pick your heros carefully Ontario, don’t be manipulated like the Americans have been.

I agree with Doug Ford and shipping back the US Alcohol to the US and sell it in our stores. I also agree to him cutting off our electricity and natural gas to the States of New York, Ohio? Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin. As well not pur 25% Tariffs on all US products coming into Canada which will hurt the US economy because no Canadian will be American Products while that is on it. This is especially for electronics, video games, computers, clothes from Tommy Hilfiger, Hollister, Calvin Klein.

Trump likes to hear himself speak and when he speaks he Wants peaople to jump. He says Canada has treated them Poorly. Then maybe he needs Better Negotiators as They Agreed to the terms set by Another Government. There is No Need for all these Hostilities towards a Brotherly Allie for over a Century, its Truly regrettable. I Guess they really dont need our oil, Gas, Hydro, Aluminum. I See now hes Putins Ally not ours. How unfortunate hes just another Tyrrant the world doesnt need.

The USA are not our friends, most know nothing about Canada.
I suggest a tax on Canadians who Snowbird, our money should not be going there.

We were warned but thought conveniently about that warning. Now I hope we develop our country as we always should, with respect for our selves and our natural resources.
An oil refinery on the East of Canada, A pipe line to it, abattoirs which can freeze pack for export and processing plants for our resources to export. Employ our people to process and export. Trade with countries without leveraging politics and move on, permanently, from the United State who are nobodies friends.
The USA is attempting to occupy Canada, Greenland and Panama, they are not a generous people. He helped them with their illegal wars, no more, the bite the hand that feeds them.
