New wildfire reported Northeast of Huntsville

UPDATE (Aug. 12, 2025). This fire has been put out.

The Ministry of Natural Resources’ interactive fire map is showing a new wildfire Northeast of Huntsville, just North of Hwy 60 in Algonquin Park.

This fire, first reported at about 1:30 p.m. this afternoon, has not yet been brought under control. It is just 0.1 hectares in size.

To view the fire hazard conditions in your area, use the Ministry’s Interactive Map.

Please stay away from areas experiencing wildfires in order to allow crews to access the areas safely and without delays. Authorities also warn that it is illegal to fly drones within nine kilometres of a forest fire for the safety of firefighters and pilots.

A total fire ban remains in effect in Muskoka until further notice. That means:

  • No open-air fires of any kind are permitted at any time, including for cooking or warmth and no fireworks are permitted.
  • Extra caution should be taken when using any equipment/tools that may produce  heat: Avoid the use of grinding tools and hot works outdoors.
  • Do not drive any type of vehicle through long grass/brush, as hot exhaust and engines  can ignite dry ground cover.
  • Dispose of cigarette and cannabis butts in metal containers and/or water. Additional care should be taken when using propane appliances such as barbeques. A  responsible person should always monitor these appliances while they’re in use.

The article says “a responsible person”. There in lies the problem. A lot of the people that go camping have no idea or don’t care about a forest fire. Maybe the province needs to cancel all camping on crown land other than in organized camp grounds until fire conditions change.
