The Town of Huntsville has announced that a new playground is coming to River Mill Park this fall. As part of the 2025 budget, the Town planned for the replacement of the playground and says its new features will be a welcome addition to the community in the heart of downtown.
This state-of-the-art playground will feature engaging and accessible equipment designed to provide an enriching play experience for all kids, including as young as toddlers.
Playground features include:
- Inclusive Swing Seat – Designed with a three-point harness, full back and headrest for a secure and supportive ride
- Together Glider – A spacious, wheelchair-accessible platform that allows up to ten children to play together
- Multi-User Arch Swing – A basket-style swing promoting social play and vestibular development
- Roller Slide – A sensory-friendly slide that provides a full-body tactile experience
- Interactive Play Panels – Encouraging cognitive and sensory development through music, art, and decision-making games
- Rubber Tiles – Providing a safe and accessible surface for all users
“This playground represents our commitment to creating inclusive spaces where children of all abilities can come together to play, learn, and build lasting memories,” said Councillor Dione Schumacher, Chair of the Town’s Accessibility Advisory Committee. “We can’t wait to see the community enjoy and explore the new playground.”
River Mill Park playground will be closed starting September 23, 2025, to allow for the removal of the old equipment and to begin new construction. The installation of the equipment is weather permitting and the Town will provide an update on when the new space is open to public use.
River Mill Park playground was installed in 2008, and as the most prominent playground in Huntsville, it has seen high usage over the years. The decision to replace the playground was made after an inspection indicated that the playground’s equipment had seen significant wear, and a new structure was approved in the 2025 budget for $320,000.

The park we have is fine put that money to help getting our homeless people off the streets and stop all the break-in we are having here in town. There are so many things that money could go to help our community.
Kind of surprised PARKing is not something more immediately addressed for here &surrounding area. Kids can’t even go play when there is no parking &you’re driving around and around trying to park; only to have upset feelings when you have to leave the parking lot to find parking elsewhere.
Build a double level parking garage or something of size for those in the area plus those you want to welcome out of area, then upgrade playground or whatever else desires beautification.
Please to butcher it like Irene Street Park. Most parents really did not like the change. Moms of kids below school age need parks that are accessible for their little ones and Irene Street Park is now not a place for kids 0-4
Why not include a splash pad?
Money Well spent. Always bad to see taxpayers dollars spent on kids.Old stuff no doubt worn out due to massive use. Kudos !
More taxpayer dollars being wasted, must be getting close to a million dollars in that area just between the playground and washrooms
