The weather is getting warmer and you’re itching to start on some spring building projects. But, wait. Before you begin, do you need a building permit?
If you do, the Express Permit Extravaganza on May 5 may help you get that project going faster.
“We are excited to be able to provide this day for our customers to help them get through the process faster for smaller projects,” says Amanda Ferrante, Deputy Chief Building Inspector with the Town of Huntsville.
A building permit is required if you are building a structure that exceeds 10 square metres in size. At the Express Permit Extravaganza, you can submit building permit applications for accessory buildings (sheds / carports / garages less than 592 square feet), septic systems, decks, a pool enclosure, demolition, interior renovations, and temporary tents.
Here’s how it works:
First, go to the Building Forms, Applications & Reports page on huntsville.ca and download the building application form. While you’re there, be sure to read the applicable PDFs to see what other documentation is required for your application.
Complete the application as best you can and arrange for a site plan if necessary. All waterfront lots require site plan approval prior to submitting your application as part of the express permit process.
Bring all of the required documentation—the application form along with supporting plans and documents—to Huntsville Home Depot (9 Ott Drive) between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on May 5. Town staff will be there to review your application and help you to finish completing it if needed.
“If you need help with the application, we’re there to help. If you just want to submit your application, you can submit it and quickly be on your way,” says Ferrante.
If your application meets all of the requirements, your permit will be ready for pickup during extended business hours at Town Hall on Wednesday, May 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Although payment is usually required when applications are submitted, for this event only you will pay for your permit at the time of pick up.
What if you can’t get there on May 5 but still want to submit an application? You can send someone on your behalf provided they have all of the required documentation. You can also have someone pick up your permit on May 9, as long as they bring payment with them, or you can pick up your permit during other regular business hours at Town Hall.
“We wanted to offer this day for people who can’t easily bring in an application to Town Hall—cottagers who live in the city or locals who can’t take time away from work,” says Ferrante. “It’s something to hopefully relieve the pain that the customers are feeling if they are trying to build and then find they have to wait to get their permits.”
