“A lot of people cringe when they say they need a building permit, but it’s a good thing,” says Amanda Ferrante, Deputy Chief Building Inspector for the Town of Huntsville. “When you go to sell your property, you can say ‘we got a permit for this and everything is fine’, and you can sell it confidently.”
With building season ramping up soon, the Town is offering three Express Permit Extravaganza days to help homeowners get through the process a little bit quicker. The extended hours are also helpful for people who can’t easily get to Town Hall during regular business hours.
This is the second year the Town is holding these express permit days, this year in the building department on the second floor of Town Hall. Thanks to the success of last year’s inaugural one-day event, there will be three dates when express permit applications can be submitted: May 1, May 8 and May 15 between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. each date. Provided all requirements are met, permits will be fast-tracked and will be issued and ready for pick up one week after submission (on May 8, May 15 and May 22 respectively.)
How do you know if you need a permit? If you are building a structure that exceeds 10 square metres (107 square feet) in size, then you will need a building permit. Through the express permit process, the Town will only accept building permit applications for accessory buildings like sheds, carports and garages less than 592 sq. ft., septic systems, decks, pool enclosures, interior renovations, temporary tents, and demolition. Applications for all other projects can be submitted through the Town’s regular permit process.
Be sure to bring two copies of your site plan and a fully completed application form with you. You can call ahead if you need help completing the form, or Town staff will be available on express permit dates to help out. If you can’t make it on those dates, you can send someone on your behalf as long as they have all of the required documentation with them.
Building permit applications are available online at huntsville.ca and should be completed prior to submission. Please note that all waterfront lots are subject to Site Plan Approval and will need completion of site plan approval prior to submitting application as part of the express permit process.
“The summer season is a busy building time for residents and businesses in our area,” says Ferrante. “By having extended hours in May and an express five-day permit issuance, we hope to ease the building process for everyone and continue to provide superior services.”
