A man responsible for attacks on strangers and police in downtown Bracebridge had his day in court recently.
Appearing in a Bracebridge courtroom, Eric Rushton, 29, pled guilty to several charges, including breach of court orders, assaulting police, assault with a weapon, and mischief to property.
Court heard Rushton was responsible for several unprovoked attacks on people on Taylor Road.
That included blocking people with his bicycle and throwing his bicycle at an individual in his car on Manitoba Street. The attack on the motorist broke the windshield and dented the car. Rushton also threw his bicycle at another car on Manitoba Street before hammering on the window and breaking off the passenger side mirror.
In another incident, a woman on Manitoba Street attempted to drive around him, but he rammed his bike into her car, denting the car door.
In total, several thousand dollars of damage was done to the vehicles
Court heard that in another incident, Rushton was stopped by police in downtown Bracebridge because he was drinking a beer. He became aggressive toward the officer, and he reached into his backpack to grab another beer after the officer took the one he was drinking. A scuffle ensued and Rushton spit on the office several times.
Rushton was given credit for 92 days spent in pre-trial custody in addition to 18 months of probation. He was also ordered to pay back more than $5,000 in restitution.

Bill Beatty says
The man is obviously in need of psychiatric help and letting him out of jail at this point will only result in danger to the public , himself and frustration and possible harm to police who have to deal with an obviously unwell person . Spitting on people is beyond disgusting !
