Muskoka GeoHub gets new features

It’s an important community tool used by municipal planning departments, realtors, planning consultants, community members and others and it just got better, the District planning committee heard at its May 23 meeting.

District Manager of GIS Graham Good gave committee an overview of some of the recent changes and updates to the Muskoa GeoHub. “I have to say that this may be the single largest update since we launched the site over two and a half years ago,” said Good. He told the committee that since that time, there had been 370,000 hits on the public part of the website and many more than that on the internal version of the site. He said he continues to be amazed at how fast the site loads with over 3.5 terabytes of data.

Among the changes:

  • Users of lidar flood mapping now have the ability to access digital elevation models.
  • Water elevation data also available.
  • Flood line mapping has been updated to show detailed locations of where potential flood lands are located based on the ground elevation lidar data.
  • Digital surface modelling is now included, which shows top of trees, buildings, hydro lines, etc. and includes surface model elevation to help determine heights of trees, etc.
  • A new feature helps model shadows cast by buildings, etc.
  • District has completed data-sharing agreement with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry for lidar mapping information that can be downloaded from the Ministry’s website.
  • New 2023 3D air photos have been added to both the public and internal parts of the site. Good said that since 2018, about 15,000 new buildings have been added.
