Ministry to hold public meeting on allocating another 20 beds to Fairvern

As the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care considers a redevelopment proposal for Fairvern Nursing Home and the allocation of an additional 20 beds to the home’s existing 76 beds, it will hold a public meeting to gather community input.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Friends Multi-Purpose Room of the Huntsville Public Library, located at 7 Minerva Street.

Rob Laver, Chair of the Board of Directors for Fairvern, said the home’s redevelopment committee, chaired by Bev McWilliams, has been working closely with the Ministry over the last few months and is optimistic that the redevelopment project is moving forward.

“The public consultation is to discuss an additional 20 (long-term care) beds going to Fairvern as part of the redevelopment program, so we take that as good news at this point,” said Laver. He said representatives from the North Simcoe Muskoka Local Health Integration Network (which co-ordinates and manages public health dollars on behalf of the Ministry) will be in attendance as well as representatives from Fairvern. Members of the public are also invited to weigh in on Fairvern being licensed for an additional 20 beds.

“Absolutely Fairvern needs an additional 20 beds. It helps make us more financially sustainable at that size than at 76 (beds). We’ve seen our waiting list for residents more than double over the last 18 to 24 months, so there’s obviously from a waiting list perspective a huge need for additional beds for seniors,” said Laver who hopes to receive a green light from the Ministry for the additional beds and to proceed with the home’s capital redevelopment plans in the very near future.

Laver hopes community members will attend the meeting and voice their support for additional long-term care beds for Fairvern, which also form part of its redevelopment plans.
