Huntsville’s MBRP Major Midget Otters traded wins with the Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL) Wolves in the first two games of the OMHA finals at the Don Lough Arena this weekend in front of a hometown crowd of more than 500.

In the series opener Saturday night (March 11), the first period was marked by exciting back-and-forth offensive hockey, said team coach Sandy Campbell. NOTL scored first on a power play but were quickly answered by the Otters with a goal by Kyler Campbell, assisted Cam Aben.

The Wolves scored again to go up by one until Otter Ethan Murdy scored on a breakaway after receiving a perfect pass from Dylan Welsh.

Heading into the third period, the game was tied at 2-2 and would remain that way until the buzzer. Coach Campbell noted the exceptional goal-tending by Otter Tyler Miller.

With less than four minutes left in the overtime period, Kyler Campbell scored for the win 3-2 after tipping in a slapshot from Quinn Thompson.

The Otters used the game as an opportunity to fundraise for Huntsville Hospital, raising more than $300 for cancer care.

In Sunday’s game, Huntsville opened scoring with a goal by Ethan Murdy on a pass from Dylan Welsh. The team then got into penalty trouble, allowing NOTL to even up the score. The Wolves would score two more in the second period to go up 3-1.

Despite dominating the third period, the Otters could not score against the NOTL goalie. The Wolves scored an empty net goal to seal their 4-1 victory.

The best-of-six-points series is tied at 1-1 with Huntsville travelling to NOTL this weekend for games three and four, with a possible game five on the Don Lough ice on March 25. Check back for scores.

Good luck on the road, Otters!
