Making curling in Huntsville an inclusive sport!

The Huntsville Curling Club (HCC) is excited to announce that in 2025 they will celebrate their 125th anniversary. Over the next few seasons, the curling club is embarking on the final stages of renovation plans to create a fully accessible facility and to set the foundation for the next 125 years!

Given the age of the core building’s infrastructure, substantial changes are required to make the facility fully accessible. As a result, HCC will need to invest $500,000 in additional renovations, including:

  • an accessible club entrance,
  • a lift to allow participants to move to each level of the club,
  • accessible washroom and change room facilities.

At the July 2023 Annual General Meeting, the Board announced a capital campaign called Access125 with a goal of raising over $125,000 to be used to pay for the lift and the accessible club entrance.

Access125 runs from September 2023 to mid-2026 and consists of a number of FUNraising events (such as Saddle Up Huntsville!), a Stewardship Campaign, and Naming Rights.

HCC President Ron Kreutzer stated, “Access125 is a significant component in the Huntsville Curling Club’s plans to have an accessible, community-focused facility and I am very excited by the prospect of having a building usable by people of all abilities and ages.”

Debbie Kirwin is the past chair of the Accessibility Advisory Committee for the Town of Huntsville and has been working with the HCC on its accessibility plans over the past five years. She is excited to see the final push for an inclusive environment. Debbie commented, “It has been 20 years since we left curling and Toronto behind. It is one of many sports that can easily be accessed by wheelchair users given the right circumstances. I look forward to playing again and the socialization that brings people of all abilities together.”

HCC would like to partner with the community, corporations, service clubs, families, individual donors, and sponsors to assist with the Access125 initiative to raise $125,000 by 2025. Their goal is to invite the community to join them in celebrating their 125th anniversary in a fully accessible facility in 2025/26.

Kicking off the Access125 campaign is the first fundraising event called Saddle Up Huntsville! This western-themed night will include great food, dancing, and a silent auction and you can step up with the Line Dancing instructor and give line dancing a try. So Saddle Up Huntsville! and come out for a great evening on Saturday, September 16th from 6 pm until 11 pm. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased online at huntsvillecurlingclub.ca or at the Chamber Information Centre located in the Festival Theatre Office.
