Major Midget gold at all-star challenge

Major Midget Otters bring home gold from early-season tournament

The puck has dropped and the 2017/18 minor hockey season is in full swing!

The Huntsville Otters Major Midget team started their season off as champs bringing home gold from the 4th Annual All-Star Challenge 2017 in Lincoln last weekend.

The coaches’ motto for the team is “we win as a team and we lose as a team” to promote the need for the players to work together to play good hockey.

The Major Midgets travelled to Lincoln Blades country to compete against four other teams.

Game one had the Otters face off against Parry Sound to start the weekend with a 2-0 win. In game two, the ice held the Otters and the Mariposa Lightning, with another successful win for Huntsville, 3-0, earning the Otters a bye straight into the Sunday semi-finals.

Huntsville played against Niagara on the Lake and kept a strong lead to take their third win of the weekend, 4-1, and a berth in the finals. The Major Midgets had lost a couple of players due to a broken clavicle and to a suspension, but having a smaller bench and adjusting the lines didn’t rock this team heading into the finals.

Huntsville met up with the tournament hosts, the Lincoln Blades, and took their motto to the ice. They denied every Lincoln shot to take the gold, 3-0. Great teamwork, Otters!

The team’s coaches are all about respect and having fun, says team manager Amanda Jones. Coaching the players to be good citizens on and off the ice is very important to them.

The Otters Major Midgets have played just one regular season game so far – a 3-3 tie against Parry Sound. The team is off to away games this weekend against South Muskoka and Elmvale. They’ll be back October 27-29 to host eight other teams for their home tournamet – come out and cheer them on!
