MAHC recognized for its support of Trillium Gift of Life Network

Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC) has been recognized for its performance in support of organ and tissue donation in Ontario.

MAHC is among only eight Ontario hospitals out of 69 facilities that attained a 100 per cent routine notification rate between April 1 and June 30, 2017, according to the Trillium Gift of Life Network. Routine notification is the rate at which hospitals notify Trillium Gift of Life Network (TGLN) when there may be potential for organ and/or tissue donation.

“We are really proud of this achievement,” says Dr. David Johnstone, the physician lead for MAHC’s Organ Donation and Tissue Transplantation Committee. “This perfect notification rate is thanks to the concerted efforts of staff to follow the criteria that have been outlined by the network for when it should be notified of a death in the hospital. Then Trillium Gift of Life takes it from there in connecting with the family about whether they would like to consider donation.”

TGLN is the provincial agency that plans, promotes, coordinates and supports organ and tissue donation and transplantation across Ontario. MAHC has been a designated hospital under the TGLN Act since 2013.

“It’s important at MAHC that we raise awareness of the organ and tissue donation need across the province and do our part to embed a standardized notification process within the hospital,” says Natalie Bubela, Chief Executive Officer. “My hat’s off to our front-line team members for their commitment to establishing a strong culture of donation and integrating it as part of quality end-of-life care because one donor can save up to eight lives and enhance as many as 75 lives through tissue donation.”
