MAHC invites community to hospital budget information sessions

Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC) is inviting members of the community to information sessions about hospital funding and operating budgets.

The purpose of the sessions is to educate the public about the provincial funding formula for hospitals, the current capital needs at both sites, and to highlight some of the operating challenges MAHC faces this fiscal year under the current funding allocation model.

A session will be held at each of MAHC’s sites and will include an informative presentation. As space and seating is limited, please register in advance by contacting Allyson Snelling at 705-789-2311 ext. 2544 or email [email protected].

The mtg in Huntsville was 1 1/2 hr. long. Much too detailed and complicated to explain in an article. Budgets and How provincial funding formula has impacted all hospitals in last 5 yrs. were discussed. Questions by the few who attended were asked and answered, explaining some more complicated issues. Hospital management led mtg.with some Board members there to give input where needed.

I agree that an article in the newspaper would be more helpful because it would be something that could be reviewed quietly and carefully.
It would also give people something to refer to later and it would allow time for the information to digest .
Having said this, I laud those who are organizing a meeting because it shows that they are trying to engage the public in a conversation about the issue and it shows that they are trying to bring all of us up to speed about the financial situation.

This is an “information session” on the current hospital operating budget not the proposed budgets for any potential future sites. Two sites, so two meeting locations. What’s the problem with this? Are they not being transparent enough or not allowing for enough public presentations of current information on how MAHC operates? This stuff is on their website but nobody bothers to read it. It’s easier to complain and get angry.

Why would a public budget information session encourage “two more shouting sessions?” If you aren’t interested in attending and receiving this information – don’t go. Others may choose to take advantage of this opportunity to inform themselves.

I’m sorry but I don’t understand how you can realistically discuss operating budgets until the MAHC Task Force reports, and some resolution among the 3 proposals eventuates. Yes, I think that people are interested in the provincial funding formula; but no, I don’t feel that it warrants 2 meetings. An article in the Doppler, Forester, and Examiner (including the funding formula, the capital needs at Huntsville and Bracebridge, and how impactful the formula is on those needs) would suffice.

Pandemonium times two will resolve nothing: two more shouting sessions are a waste of time at this point. A similar article initially would have been extremely helpful. “A stitch in time saves nine”, while “Delays breed dangers”.
