Through the hardships of COVID, the local USS Nomad Star Trek Club has found friendship and community, and completed a number of charity projects to help others.
The club is based in Huntsville, where the majority of its charitable efforts remain, with members from all over North America. What started out as a few friends from Huntsville has turned into a club of 45 people.
“We try to make our club very multi-faceted,” said executive officer Erin Davies, who lives in the States. “Some members are huge Star Trek fans and join for the watch parties and friendship but others are mainly charity-driven. We have something for everyone.”
The USS Nomad used to start a new project almost every month, but now they are making them even bigger and spanning a few months to raise more funds for each charity.
Their newest project is a food drive to help The Table as the local charity transitions into the tough winter months.
Last year they did a similar project and gathered 1,500 pounds of food for the members’ local food banks.
“I have never seen a charity at the level of dedication as The Table. You guys should be really proud you have an organization like them in your community,” said Davies.
Randy Mitson joined the club after seeing how much charity work they were doing and how they aligned with his passion for helping the Huntsville community.
“This charity aspect brings our club to the real world,” he said. “It’s a science fiction fantasy show but we love bringing Star Trek back to the real world and helping real people. The fandom and friendships are an amazing added bonus.”
The USS Nomad will be competing against another Star Trek Club called KAG (Klingon Assault Group) to gather the most food for their respective charities.
“Last year Klingon beat us so we we need to defeat them,” said Davies. “We are determined”.
If you want to join the club or learn more about it visit ussnomad.ca. You don’t have to be a fan of Star Trek to join — if you are looking to volunteer or be a part of a new community they would love to have you.
They will be collecting food from November 1 to December 31. To make a donation of nonperishable food items, which a club member will pick up, contact Randy Mitson at 705-571-1615.
