Lake Vernon property owners complete shoreline restoration project

Working with waterfront property owners, the Lake Vernon Association (LVA) has completed another shoreline restoration project.

The work focused on sections of shoreline that were experiencing significant wave and boat wake erosion, causing large silt plumes, and impacting water quality.

These shoreline restoration projects provide visible and tangible proof to other property owners on the “art of the possible” when it comes to helping Mother Nature heal the shoreline and the benefits of a naturalized shoreline, notes the LVA.

While healthy and natural shorelines, known as the “ribbon of life,” provide habitat, including shelter and food for over 90 percent of aquatic wildlife, they are also among the most threatened, according to the Muskoka Watershed Council. Increasing pressures for shoreline development, hardened or manicured shorelines, and erosion due to wave and boat wake often lead to habitat loss and degradation, water quality issues, and the overall deterioration of the health and enjoyment of our lakes.

LVA has been collaborating with its members to educate them on the benefits and resilience of maintaining a natural shoreline.

The LVA website and Facebook provide waterfront owners with natural restoration techniques, various resources, and expert contacts to assist with their project planning and execution. A key resource is Watersheds Canada’s The Natural Edge – Shoreline Re-naturalization Program, offered by the Muskoka Watershed Council. You can click on it HERE.

Living on Lake Vernon, I appreciate the work of the Association and its members/volunteers. If we want to keep our pristine environment in Huntsville – Muskoka – Ontario, we need everyone to get engaged!!

I encourage everyone on the Lake Vernon Watershed to get involved even if it is just joining the Association and being informed. https://lake-vernon.ca/
