Lake of Bays’ longest serving councillor says she won’t be running again

Nancy Tapley, Lake of Bays Councillor for Franklin Ward, has announced that she will not be seeking reelection.

Tapley made the announcement today on her Facebook page.

She has served her community for 28 years and was first elected in 1998. During that time, Tapley said she has served on council with “some remarkable people.”

She said it has been her great honour to serve the people of Lake of Bays, and she has “shared council with some remarkable people. Four different Mayors. Many staff changes. Different personalities, different Councillors.”

Tapley said the last four years have been perhaps the most amicable, with all members working together.

She said they survived the COVID era, “and the first Century Flood (they come faster now), even tornadoes. Hell and high water.

“Since the inception of the Heritage Advisory Committee, I have watched it grow until it is second in the province for delegated buildings, a winner of several Provincial Awards, and graced by truly remarkable people who believe passionately in the unique heritage we share.”

Tapley said she has seen the expansion of both libraries in Dwight and Baysville, and the creation of the Dorset Health Hub, as well as multiple Official Plans, “and so much more, all to the benefit of the people of Lake of Bays. I am so proud of how this Municipality strives to protect shorelines and environment,” she added.

She called the experience a truly humbling journey, sometimes passionate and fun for the most part, as she thanked everyone who placed their faith in her as their representative for the past 28 years.

“But it’s time. After 28 years, I’m done. There are other interests, other adventures, in my future. I am not going to seek reelection this year. I want to thank our amazing office staff, all of them, for their professionalism and assistance during my tenure. There are none better.

“And I must thank Terry, Jackie, George, Rick, Bob and Mike for all the arguments, agreements, respect, and tireless dedication to the Lake. It was an honour to work with you,” she wrote, adding. “I’ll still be here, at BONDI VILLAGE RESORT, my family home. Drop by and say hi.”

I guess at some point whatever it is that flows in the municipal system of government reaches a high water mark and this appears to be it.
There will be plenty of weeds to be pulled in some of her gardens still, that is a for sure thing.

Congratulations on your retirement Nancy! To say that it is well-deserved is an understatement. The entire Tapley family have been and remain such good and faithful stewards of LOB.
Nancy is the most vocal….although you are all pretty outspoken when it comes to championing your beloved municipality.
    Enjoy your next chapter.
