Twits win Ladies’ slo-pitch championship and season

It took two days because of the weather but the Twits won the Huntsville Ladies’ Slo-Pitch Championships on Sunday beating Independent Grocers in the season’s final playoff tournament.

The game actually started Saturday afternoon but rain and wind forced officials to move the rest of the game to Sunday.

The Twits started play Sunday tied 4-4. That was quickly wiped out by Independent. It took a sixth inning rally by the Twits to come away with the victory 9-7 and the championship in the “A” division.

Earlier Saturday, the Diggit Chicks beat Dave’s Hoes 7-6 to win the “B” division trophy.

The victory was icing on the cake for the Twits who also won the regular season championship.

Tara Alexander of the Twits said it was a long time coming.

“This was ten years in the making,” she said as her teammates celebrated the moment behind her. “Most of the players have been on this team for seven years and we have been competing, competing, competing and here we are.”

Coach Dan Guenette, who shared the coaches award with Derek Demers and Jamie Carter, said the difference for the Twits in the late innings, delivering the win, was attitude and determination.

These girls have worked a long time to get to this point. They are always up for each other, stay positive, and they are resilient. We were here an hour before the game today. The girls were motivated. They wanted to win. They were here to play.Twits’ coach Dan Guenette

Other individual awards went to Shannon May for the game’s most valuable player. The League’s most sportsman-like player was Christalee Sawyer who was playing in her 13th season. The Huntsville Ladies’ Slo-Pitch League has 13 teams.

Before the season began the Twits didn’t have a sponsor but were prepared to pay the $1300 for the year out of their own pocket. Skyview Builders and Ron Pratt Electric stepped forward after a plea from Pamela McCluskey.

“I did put a call out to my fellow Rotarians,” said McCluskey, “and I got an email from Dave Van Gelder, the owner of Skyview Builders who was willing to be a co-sponsor. He joined with Ron Pratt Electric and I am happy to say we are bringing them a gold medal.”
