The Hon. Bruce Payne, a Huntsville native and formerly a judge on the Ontario Court of Justice, has died.
He was born on October 9, 1928 and with his wry sense of humour would tell family and friends that was why we have Thanksgiving! He was the eighth child of 16 siblings in a family that continues to be an important part of the Huntsville community. His sister, Marj Boucher of Huntsville, is the only surviving sibling.
Bruce Payne was first educated in Huntsville, where his potential was recognized by one of his teachers, Irene Stewart, who mentored him and made it possible for him to seek higher education. She failed him in grade seven but stuck with him and he went on to become a teacher, a lawyer and a judge. They remained life-long friends.
After graduating from university, Bruce taught grade eight in Northern Ontario where he met his wife Marjorie. One of his students was Frank Mahavolich, who he told, “If all you are going to think about is hockey, you will never amount to anything!”
After teaching, Bruce entered law school and subsequently practised law in Guelph where he and Marjorie raised their three children. After a number of years in private practice, he was appointed a judge where he remained for eighteen years.
“Bruce Payne never left Huntsville far behind,” said former mayor and family friend, Hugh Mackenzie. “In fact, he and Marjorie returned here to live permanently about 25 years ago. They both were tremendous contributors to our community and during the time I was mayor, Bruce was a constant support. He was a good friend and I shall miss him.”
Bruce Payne died on April 5, 2017. There will be a visitation at Billingsley Funeral Home (430 Ravenscliffe Road, Huntsville) on Sunday, April 9 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life Service will occur at Billingsley Funeral Home on Monday, April 10 at 2:00 p.m., Reverend Mal Binks officiating. Reception to follow at Sutherland Hall (30 High Street, Huntsville). Memorial Gifts to Hospice Huntsville or Huntsville Hospital Foundation.
