A Huntsville man was convicted of multiple crimes stemming from a car accident, a Bracebridge courtroom heard recently.
James Dawson, 58, pled guilty to driving while suspended, resisting arrest and refusing to comply with a demand for a breath sample.
Court heard that on May 1, 2022 at roughly 5 pm police received a call regarding a pick-up truck in the ditch on Stephenson Road 2. The caller said they stopped and spoke with the driver, who they believed was impaired.
When police arrived they found the driver walking away from the truck and towards another vehicle, court heard. The man, later identified as Dawson stumbled as he approached the other vehicle. He refused to provide his name but a health card was found identifying him as Dawson. A thermos was also found in the crashed truck, which smelled of alcohol.
Court heard Dawson refused to provide a breath sample and refused to get into the cruiser. He then kicked one of the officers when they attempted to get him into the cruiser, court heard. It was also determined he was a suspended driver at the time of the accident.
Court heard Dawson has a criminal record but has undergone a number of traumatic events in the past several years.
He was given four months of house arrest, a suspended sentence, 12 months probation and a $1,000 fine.
