Huntsville ranked #3 in category for national Culture Days

The numbers are in and Huntsville is near the top. In the Culture Days 2015 list of Top Tens, Huntsville is at number three for number of activities in towns with less than 49,000 people, beating out larger centres like Orillia, Stratford, and Vernon B.C. There were 69 Culture Days activities scheduled in Huntsville from September 25-27, 2015.

“I’ve been plugging away at Culture Day for a number of years,” said Teri Souter, Manager of Arts, Culture and Heritage for the Town of Huntsville. “The infrastructure for the event is in place. This year we had such great success due to a super volunteer named Pam MacKenzie who knocked on doors [read Doppler’s earlier story on Pam MacKenzie here], and also because we had an information session by Culture Days at Town Hall in April. It was really well attended. I think people saw how easy it is to participate.”

The number of events leapt from seven in 2014 to 69 events in 2015. “We had some really great wins out of that, like the ghost of Tom Thomson. He has 28,000 Twitter followers and he announced the event ahead of time. People came from as far as Oakville to hear his talk and it was picked up by CBC Radio.”

Credit for its growth goes to the community. It’s pretty exciting to see that people are wanting to engage with cultural activities and participate at this level and in this volume.

“Our next step will be to increase attendance at the events and to encourage people to partner,” said Souter. “For example, if you have a woodworking shop, they could partner with a theatre group and do a Pinocchio skit and that captures two audience interests.

“We need to continue to build on what we already offer so it’s sustainable. There’s so much more we think we can do. This year had beautiful weather. It fell on the same weekend as the Fall Fair. We could find ways to incorporate the fair as an outreach activity. There are a lot of things we are excited about moving forward.”

The 7th Annual Culture Days weekend will be held September 30, October 1 & 2, 2016.
