A Huntsville-area resident is preparing to undertake an extraordinary challenge this summer, combining her love of canoe tripping, swimming, Algonquin Park and freshwater conservation into a 125-kilometre fundraising swim.
Beginning July 13 at Kiosk Campground in the northwestern region of Algonquin Provincial Park, Mara Hallman plans to swim more than 125 kilometres over 19 days, finishing her journey at Canoe Lake on July 31. The self-supported expedition will require Hallman to average more than 6.5 kilometres of open-water swimming each day.
Adding to the challenge, Hallman will tow all of her food and camping equipment behind her in an inflatable raft while swimming and carry her gear across portages throughout the route.
Three separate canoe teams—made up of friends, mentors and family members—will accompany Hallman during different sections of the journey, providing safety support along the way.
Hallman says her lifelong connection to Algonquin Park inspired the ambitious undertaking and her desire to raise awareness about the importance of protecting freshwater resources.
“Algonquin Park is the headwaters of so many incredible rivers, including the Big East and Muskoka Rivers, which are essential for our freshwater, recreation and tourism base in Huntsville,” Hallman said. “I want to highlight the importance of freshwater protection and access.”
The swim is being organized in support of Water First, a Canadian charity that works to improve access to safe drinking water in First Nations communities. Hallman notes that approximately 16 per cent of First Nations communities in Canada are currently under drinking water advisories.
The initiative has also received support from Algonquin Outfitters. As part of the challenge, Hallman plans to follow the company’s Pack-it-Out principles, which encourage visitors to enjoy the park while leaving no trace of their presence.
Hallman hopes the journey will not only raise funds for Water First but also spark conversations about the value of freshwater resources and the importance of protecting them for future generations.
