In their first home game of the season on October 28, the Huntsville Bantam Sting kept the pressure on opponents the North Simcoe Bantam Blue Capitals to come away with a 3-2 win – their first regular season win in the team’s two seasons of play – to bring their 2017/18 season record to 1-1-1.
Huntsville took an early lead with two first-period goals. Kate Franks, #12, led the way, assisted by #2 Haley Birkhimer. Asha Robinson, #14, followed suit, assisted by #15 Angeline Carreau and #22 Eve Carreau. It was Robinson’s third goal of the season. Goalie #7 Evangeline Perentesis blocked every shot of the period, denying the Capitals entry onto the scoreboard.
Not to be shut out, the Capitals fought back with a goal in each of the second and third periods to tie the game at two. But all of the Sting lines played hard and, with 4:38 remaining in the final period, Sting #6 Morgan McCartney scored Huntsville’s third and, ultimately, game-winning goal, assisted by #22 Eve Carreau. Perentesis and the Sting defense would hold the score there, aided by a late-period slashing penalty against the Capitals.
Eve Carreau received player of the game.

The Bantam Sting are part of the growing Huntsville Girls Hockey Association (HGHA); this is the team’s second season. They play in the North Simcoe/Muskoka Girls House League which includes girls teams from Huntsville, Barrie, Orillia, Clearview and Midland. (Read more about girls hockey in Huntsville on Doppler here.)
“It’s so exciting to see so many girls playing this year with the Sting in all divisions,” said McCartney. “(The HGHA) has grown so much in the last couple years.”
The HGHA will host its 41st annual home tournament from January 12-14, 2018, with teams from Novice to Senior participating. Last season’s tournament welcomed almost 70 teams from across Ontario to Huntsville. (Read about it on Doppler here.) The tournament is a fundraiser that helps to reduce player fees, and the association looks to the community for ice sponsorship and silent auction items.
