HPL Food for Fines is back in support of the Salvation Army Food Bank

You might think about donating to the local food bank at Christmas or Thanksgiving, but what about in the summer months? The need, unfortunately, doesn’t diminish and it’s the time of year when food banks can begin to run out of some items if new stock isn’t donated.

The Huntsville Public Library (HPL) announced that starting today, May 28, through June 8, its Food For Fines program is back in support of the Salvation Army Food Bank. For every donation of a non-perishable food item, $1.00 in fines or fees will be waived from your library user account.

But you don’t have to have fines to participate—anyone can drop off a donation at the library.

Close to one million Canadians will access food banks during the summer months, noted a library release, and donations are needed to help end summer hunger.

What can be donated? Non-perishable items like these are most needed:

  • Canned pasta sauce
  • Canned soups
  • Canned stews, or chili
  • Canned vegetables or fruit
  • Kraft Dinner
  • Peanut butter
  • Jam
  • Canned tuna or salmon

Other non-perishable items can be donated as well. Just drop them in the blue bin next to the central service desk inside the library.
