There is something to look forward to in February as Huntsville High School students return to the stage with a production of the Addams Family.
The Addams Family is a comical musical feast that embraces the wackiness in every family and features an original story. It’s every father’s nightmare as Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family—a man her parents have never met. And if that wasn’t upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before—keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on a fateful night when they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.
Close to a hundred students are involved in all aspects of the theatre production. The band is also a blend of HHS students and local musicians. The choreography is provided by members of the Muskoka Dance Academy: Lynne Hill, Tasha Bryant and Sam Barber and students have been rehearsing four times per week since October.
Traditionally, there is a preview show on the morning of opening night for all of the elementary schools. Many of the students involved remember going to see the high school production at the elementary preview. This year the preview has limited seating and 347 seats have already sold.
The Addams Family will be the high school’s 8th production. They started in 2007 with Grease and their latest show took place in 2019 with the production of Newsies. Due to COVID, HHS productions were put on hold until this year.
Tickets are $20 for students, $30 for adults, and a family pack of $90 is available (call the theatre to arrange for a family pack)
Funds raised through the production will go towards leadership in the arts scholarships for graduates, explained HHS teacher Jennifer Creasor. The two-hour production will hit the Algonquin Theatre stage on February 8 -11 at 7:30 pm and on Feb 12, for a 2 pm matinee.
As far as choosing the Addams Family Musical, Creasor said she grew up watching it on TV in the 70s and when she was doing research for their next musical she stumbled upon it. “I had always loved the characters as a kid and watching another generation bring these characters to life seemed to be a great way to end my career at HHS. This will be my last musical and I know the tradition will continue with the current music and drama teachers, Mr. Benji Jordan and Ms. Nicole Taylor,” stated Creasor.
