The Huntsville High School (HHS) Alpine ski team competed at the regional Georgian Bay Secondary School Association (GBSSA) championship at Osler Bluff Ski Club in Collingwood on Thursday, February 15.
When it was done, one skier had qualified for the provincial OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations) championship with one HHS boys’ team narrowly missing the same opportunity.
“The team celebrated a third place finish by the Level 1 Boys team who finished with 23 points, two points from second place which would have seen the team qualify for OFSAA,” said Hoyas head coach Jenn Creasor.
Noah Jason, a member of the Level 1 Boys team set the fastest time on his team with 51.41 seconds. With this time, Noah will represent the Hoyas Alpine ski team as an individual racer at OFSAA which will be held at Blue Mountain Ski Resort in Collingwood from February 26-27.
The other members of the third place finishing Level 1 Boys team are Ethan Murdy, who placed 6th with a time of 52.08 seconds, Kyle Mattice placing 12th, Chris Miller placing 20th and Zach Belfry placing 33rd.
The Level 1 Girls team — Samantha Goldring, Ally Goldring, Zoey Kruusmagi, Stella Keay and Sydney Austrup — finished in 7th place at GBSSA. Samantha Goldring led the team with a 24th place finish.
The Level 2 Individual Boys and Girls racers competed and both teams had consistent 15th and 17th place finishes for the day. Jakob Heinz placed 15th and Cole Stevens placed 17th respectively in the Boys Level 2. In the Girls Level 2, Emily Jason and Sydney Stevens placed 15th and 17th respectively.
Both Creasor and ski coach Kim Sasson said they are both very proud of the team.
