HfA youth scholarship applications are now open

The Huntsville Festival of the Arts (HfA) has launched its annual scholarship program and new this year: youth 16 and older can apply.

First introduced in 1997, the scholarship awards were launched to foster the development of performing arts talent in our community. The program aims to support young people who are studying or plan to continue studies in the performing arts (music, theatre, dance). Seventy-five local youth have received financial support since the program’s inception.

Over the years, funds have been offered to various age groups. Since 2012, the Festival has directed its scholarship funds to graduating students. New in 2021, HfA will now offer both a junior (16 & under) and senior (17 & older) performing arts scholarship.

Junior scholarship (16 & under): Nominations will be accepted for local youth to receive financial honorariums in support of their artistic training and development. Individual candidates may be awarded up to $250 towards costs of instruction or equipment to support their artistic development.

Senior scholarship (17 & older): Applications will be accepted for local youth to receive a financial scholarship in support of their artistic training and development. Individual candidates may be awarded up to $1,000.

Candidates and nominees must reside in the greater Huntsville and Lake of Bays area. The deadline for applications is May 14, 2021.

“We believe that it is our responsibility to support and reinvest in the community through expanded outreach, educational programming, and the scholarship programs,” says Carol Gibson, HfA board president. “We have incredibly talented young people in this region, and we are honoured to assist them as they develop their skills even further.”

The selection process includes an audition in front of adjudicators. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these auditions will be virtual through pre-recorded videos.
