Deerhurst Highlands’ golfers defeat Grandview, again

For the third straight time, the Deerhurst Highlands golf club defeated the Grandview Mark O’Meara club in the annual two-day Golf Challenge tournament.

Grandview golfers had opened a 56 to 34 point lead after day one of the team competition at Grandview, but match play last Saturday (September 10) was a different story.

The field of 60 golfers, 30 from each club, played the match-play round in windy and wet weather conditions at Deerhurst where the Deerhurst club came back winning 59-31 on points to take the overall challenge once again.

Deerhurst Highlands Head Professional Ryan Barry said this is a tournament that everyone looks forward to.

“No matter what the outcome of the event,” he said, “it’s always great to spend a couple days playing golf with our friends from across the road.”

Todd Stephens, Head Professional at Grandview Golf Club said, “Another challenge is in the books. Team Grandview has done it again, failing to hold on to a 22-point lead after day one as Deerhurst claims the cup for a three-peat. I don’t know if it was the rain, or the course, or a little too much celebrating after day one.”

I think it’s a great tournament. I think the members really enjoy being able to spend a day at another club with new and old friends. We are blessed to have two quality championship courses of this calibre in such great shape in Huntsville to play on.Todd Stephens, Head Golf Professional at Grandview Golf Club

Stephens also said the challenge is out there for next year. Grandview has now lost three in a row and will be ready to take on their rival club.

“Rivalry is always building,” he said, “and we look forward to next year’s event.”
